A personal action – the hoarding of all 1-cent coins received as change – exploring the balance between individual consumption and the larger economy

The birdfeeder serves to simultaneously materialise the pennies as physical objects, and abstract them as non-specific multiples of a unit of arbitrary value. In the summer of '99, there was a temporary shortage of 1-cent coins in the local area. In order to avoid the embarrassment of not being able to provide exact change, local retailers were paying a premium on all pennies turned in. I'm holding out for a better offer
